The vocabulary agencies already use, offered so that a cause is recorded the same way twice rather than spelled differently by every project.

Usage

telem_mortality_causes()

Value

A character vector.

Details

The API has no cause-of-death field: fate records the outcome (telem_fates()) and stops there. Until it does, a cause supplied to telem_create_events() is written into the event's notes, lower-cased, which is where it can at least be read back. That is a workaround and it is not queryable — treat it as a place to put the value, not as a schema.

Predator species is deliberately not in this list. "predation" says how the animal died; which predator did it is a separate fact, so it goes in a predator column rather than being packed into the cause. Source data often arrives with the two conflated — a cause recorded literally as "cougar" — and splitting it into cause = "predation", predator = "cougar" keeps both facts without inventing a cause vocabulary per predator.
